Working with Notional Study Hours (NSH) or “How much is enough?”
I believe it is important to design learning from the learners perspective. That means learning that is both relevant, meaningful and motivating but also that is realistic and feasible within an agreed timeframe. This is a very brief explanation for those new to designing courses of how to work out "how much is enough?"

University libraries offer online “lending” of scanned in-copyright books
The coronavirus crisis has forced the closure of libraries around the world, depriving the public of access to millions of printed books. Books old enough to be in the public domain may be available for free download online. Many recent books are available to borrow in e-book form. But there are many other books—especially those published in the mid-to-late 20th century—that are hard to access without going to a physical library.

Disabled Students Already Faced Learning Barriers. Then Coronavirus Forced an Abrupt Shift to Online Classes.
Five years ago Christina Beck suffered a workplace injury to her head. What doctors initially advised would be alleviated with rest turned out to be a traumatic brain injury. Warned that she might spend the rest of her life mostly bedridden, Beck resolved to do what she thought would prove most neurologically difficult: enroll in New York University’s School of Professional Studies.
University students could be taking their first term of the 2020 year online
First years could miss out on freshers’ week if social distancing is still in effect. Students might have to take the first term of the 2020 academic year online if the UK is still social distancing in September, universities have said.
Keep Your People Learning When You Go Virtual
Over the past five years, we have been taking our work online deliberately and at a steady pace. At INSEAD, the business school where we work, we’ve been expanding virtual meetings, ramping up virtual classes and coaching, and introducing digital tools to enhance face-to-face work. Then, in the past few weeks, everything else moved online, too.

Distance Learning & Virtual Classrooms: Where Learning Never Stops
Virtual classrooms are not a new trend, nowadays many students around the world use distance learning as an option. Although, on some occasions experiencing a virtual class is not a voluntary choice (for example, schools responding to emergencies or temporarily shutting down) virtual learning can help fill the gap through complete and interactive online learning environments.
How To Organise An Online Conference

The Quandary: How Do I Support a Student Who’s Sick With Covid-19?
A student in your course tells you, “I have the coronavirus.” Now what? An abstract possibility has become a reality in your virtual classroom. But this isn’t the first college student to contract the virus, and it won’t be the last. Keep in mind that the virus affects people in different ways. Some may be bedridden for weeks, or hospitalized, while others will experience relatively mild symptoms and recover in a matter of days.

Early-career scientists at critical career junctures brace for impact of COVID-19
Over the past 4 weeks, Amol Pohane—a postdoc at the University of Massachusetts (UMass), Amherst—learned that he’s no longer in the running for several faculty jobs. It’s not his fault. Four universities informed him that they were canceling or postponing job searches because of COVID-19 disruptions. He’ll have the option of reapplying—or having his original application reviewed—next year, the universities told him. But that’s little comfort for Pohane, who was banking on landing a faculty job this year.
Virtual Open Days – Better than the real thing?
With technology developing faster than the speed of light, universities are investing more in virtual open days. They’re a long way off from matching the experience of the real thing, but there will be real benefits of each, especially for international students who can’t visit campus before they arrive, or when there are too many open days happening at the same time that you can’t visit them all.
An Unexpected Tool for Remote-Learning During Coronavirus: Public TV Stations
Amid the flurry of new technologies used by K-12 schools to fire up remote learning in recent weeks, a piece of seemingly antiquated technology is playing a key role: the television. School districts are getting help from an old school tech solution—television stations—that includes a cross-country public broadcast initiative to deliver remote e-learning activities while the unprecedented wave of school shutdowns affecting more than 55 million students continues.

University virtual open days: the how, what and why
As international students become an increasingly crucial proportion of the student body, ways to attract them grow ever more innovative. Enter the virtual open day. Whether a video-led web tour, a regular webinar with a Q&A or a scheduled all-singing all-dancing web-based affair, UK universities are queuing up to offer the very best in student recruitment events. Carys Wyn Roberts, director of marketing and recruitment at Bangor University, said: “Research shows that prospective students are increasingly looking for online content that gives them more of a feel for a university campus, with 360-degree images as well as video being popular.” In this respect, UK universities are ahead of their international counterparts who frequently offer virtual tours but not live events.

CORONAVIRUS (12) – A NATIONAL EFFORT IN ONLINE EDUCATION
Today, I want to issue a challenge to all Canadian universities. I think a lot of universities are going to be in significant trouble come September. I know everyone is working hard to avoid this outcome but fixing what needs to be fixed for September is simply too big a job for individual institutions. And so, I am going to argue that the only way forward is for institutions is to do something which does not come naturally to them, and that is to create a national online curriculum collaboration.
Working from home and digital literacy – what can we assume?
Australian schools have suddenly and unforeseeably been forced to plan to implement internet-based remote schooling. What does this mean in a country where student use of ICT devices at school and outside of school is already high? Are students and teachers by default already sufficiently digitally literate and confident to manage the transition? ACER Research Director Julian Fraillon looks to Australian and international data to explore some of the myths and realities related to digital literacy.
What Works in Online/Distance Teaching and Learning?
The threat posed by COVID-19 has meant that teachers in Australia and around the world are looking for the best ways to continue to support student learning outside the traditional school or early childhood setting. This has meant many are looking towards solutions like virtual / online learning or home-schooling at scale. There are now innumerable new resources and guides and ‘top 10’ best practice lists on how to deliver online education, including a focus on what students and parents should do to make the most of learning virtually. Many of these guides are helpful, however, some resources are based on little more than opinions.

4 TIPS TO ENGAGE VISITORS AT A VIRTUAL OPEN DAY
Choosing which university to go to is one of the most crucial decisions that a student will be making, potentially one which will determine the direction that their professional life takes from that point forward. It’s no surprise then, that students do copious amounts of research before settling on a university of their choice. They’ll flip through countless prospectuses, survey multiple university websites, and consume pretty much all the information there is about the universities that they’ve shortlisted in their head.
Coronavirus Upends Colleges' Financial State
Uncertainty around colleges' financial futures may be at an all-time high. The one thing that's certain is that the weakest institutions are most likely to struggle.

Opinion: There’s no returning to regular schooling as online learning goes mainstream
When in-person education resumes, online learning tools and methods will be entrenched in the system As I write this, around 30 million U.S. kids are out of school, more than 200 college campuses have closed, and millions of Americans are working from home (with many of them also trying to juggle home-schooling).
Creating an Engaging Online Learning Environment
As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and efforts to contain and reduce its spread, many educators are switching from face-to-face classrooms to virtual courses. The change can be jarring at first for the inexperienced online instructor. However, the transition to a beneficial online learning environment conducive to student success is possible with a bit of knowledge, creativity and patience.

We must not forget the impact of Covid-19 on postgraduate study in 2020/21 - HEPI
This blog was kindly contributed by Dr. Michelle Morgan, an independent consultant with an expertise in student transitions and student experience. Michelle was the creator and Principal Investigator / Project Lead for the ‘Postgraduate Experience Project’, which investigated the expectations and attitudes towards postgraduate taught STEM study across 11 UK universities. Understandably, due to the closure of schools and colleges, there is great concern about this year’s undergraduate intake and plenty of discussion on how to move forward. However, the impact the pandemic will have at postgraduate taught (PGT) level across the UK, especially with Master’s course participation, has largely been ignored to date. Not only is Covid-19 impacting current PGT participation in the UK but HESA figures show a slow down in growth following the introduction of the Postgraduate Loan Scheme in 2016/17. We need to plan ahead to support PGT participation and Covid-19 will require us to finally start thinking differently.

Learning Online The Student Experience by George Veletsianos
2020 Book Online learning is ubiquitous for millions of students worldwide, yet our understanding of student experiences in online learning settings is limited. The geographic distance that separates faculty from students in an online environment is its signature feature, but it is also one that risks widening the gulf between teachers and learners. In Learning Online, George Veletsianos argues that in order to critique, understand, and improve online learning, we must examine it through the lens of student experience. Approaching the topic with stories that elicit empathy, compassion, and care, Veletsianos relays the diverse day-to-day experiences of online learners. Each in-depth chapter follows a single learner's experience while focusing on an important or noteworthy aspect of online learning, tackling everything from demographics, attrition, motivation, and loneliness to cheating, openness, flexibility, social media, and digital divides. Veletsianos also draws on these case studies to offer recommendations for the future and lessons learned. The elusive nature of online learners' experiences, the book reveals, is a problem because it prevents us from doing better: from designing more effective online courses, from making evidence-informed decisions about online education, and from coming to our work with the full sense of empathy that our students deserve. Writing in an evocative, accessible, and concise manner, Veletsianos concretely demonstrates why it is so important to pay closer attention to the stories of students—who may have instructive and insightful ideas about the future of education. ˈAcademic integrity, assessment security and digital assessment - from CRADLE
WHAT IS ACADEMIC INTEGRITY AND ASSESSMENT SECURITY? With a rapid shift to online learning, many educators have raised concerns about student cheating. Without face-to-face examinations, how can we verify that students have completed their own work, under the circumstances we have prescribed? These concerns raise issues related to academic integrity and assessment security. Academic integrity focuses on equipping learners with the capabilities and values necessary to conduct ethical scholarship. In contrast, assessment security focuses on hardening assessment against attempts to cheat, and on detecting any cheating that has occurred. Both are necessary to ensure that students who obtain university degrees have met the required outcomes.

Exploring the Future of Teaching and Learning
2020 EDUCAUSE Horizon Report, Teaching and Learning Edition
Humanizing Online Teaching to Equitize Higher Education
Online courses are increasing access to college for students who have been traditionally left out of higher education. However, minoritized students are less likely to succeed online when compared to White and Asian peers. As the student population becomes more diverse, colleges and universities have an opportunity to improve this problem by preparing faculty to design and facilitate inclusive online learning experiences that more effectively support the needs of all learners. This paper presents a model for humanized online teaching using a theoretical framework influenced by Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT), social presence, validation theory, and Universal Design for Learning (UDL).

So much to learn about emergency remote teaching, but so little to claim about online learning

An Emerging New Etiquette
Each time a new communications technology gains a foothold, we refer to it as a medium. (Old joke: that’s because it’s neither rare nor well done.) The term isn’t quite right, though; it implies that the tech is a neutral conduit, simply a new way of conveying what was already there. Over time, media shape content.

How to Be a Better Online Teacher by Flower Darby
Whether you’ve taught online a lot or a little, chances are you didn’t enjoy it as much as teaching in person. Maybe you didn’t experience that fizz after a particularly invigorating face-to-face class. Indeed, according to a 2017 Educause survey, only 9 percent of academics prefer to teach “in a completely online environment.” That means a whopping 91 percent of us don’t. And I suspect that a good majority of that 91 percent would prefer to teach anywhere but online.

The coronavirus exposes America’s misplaced educational values
Before America began shutting down its schools en masse, a mom in Massachusetts fretted on Facebook. With a compromised immune system, she had concluded that it was safest if her child stayed home from school, so she kept her son home the first two days of the week. There was just one problem. Because the school district had not closed its doors yet and her child was healthy, the absences were considered unexcused.

Students need maximum flexibility for assessments from home
The outbreak of the new coronavirus in the UK has wreaked havoc on our education system, with schools closing and university students told to go home. GCSE and A-level exams have already been cancelled, so it would not be unreasonable to assume that universities intend to follow suit. But many universities – including Oxford, where I study – are stubbornly insisting that they will be proceeding with summer exams, albeit in a new and unexpected format.
Leading Culturally Diverse Teams in the Workplace
Why You Should Ignore All That Coronavirus-Inspired Productivity Pressure
Among my academic colleagues and friends, I have observed a common response to the continuing Covid-19 crisis. They are fighting valiantly for a sense of normalcy — hustling to move courses online, maintaining strict writing schedules, creating Montessori schools at their kitchen tables. They hope to buckle down for a short stint until things get back to normal. I wish anyone who pursues that path the very best of luck and health.
Chie Adachi on digital learning: stay connected while social distancing
From devastating bushfires, to trying to teach online into China despite the Great Firewall, and to now teaching our entire student cohort online – 2020 is already a tough year. Our social, political and educational “norms” have been fundamentally challenged. Here in university land, we seemed to have crossed over into a Twilight Zone, hoping for the pedagogical best but fearing a COVID-19 induced inadequacy.

Immediate Impacts of COVID-19
Particularly for international students or those living in campus dorms, the gradual escalation of closures and cancellations on campus have created ever-increasing uncertainty and fear for several weeks now. Messaging to students has quickly shifted from “the risk is low” and “we’re open as usual” to “this is an unprecedented health emergency” and “you must vacate residence immediately.”
With Coronavirus Disrupting College, Should Every Student Pass?
Students who have returned to a home life disrupted by the coronavirus, have been pushing their institutions to set aside grades during the outbreak, arguing that online classes are often a poor substitute and that the chaos caused by the virus falls hardest on those with the least resources.

Is the Covid19 crisis the tipping point for online learning? As we wrote in our introduction to the Silver Lining for Learning webinar series, "…this crisis has forced schools and universities to close, pushing often unprepared institutions to move teaching and learning online."
Near-Term Strategic Priorities
The Coronavirus pandemic is a human tragedy that has already killed tens of thousands, and may well kill millions around the world. It will be a major shock to global economies, institutional balance sheets, academic instruction and research, as well as to middle-class finances and the psyche of a generation of students. It has already caused chaos and disruption in the immediate term, and as detailed above will cause plenty of challenge in the near-term.

It also identifies Paulo Friere and bell hooks as radical thinkers in education worthy of note. Please note that this lecture was originally intended to be supplemented with a synchronous webinar and additional readings.
Self-care for Educators in the Time of COVID-19
Educators aren’t great at self-care in ordinary circumstances let alone the extraordinary time we now find ourselves. Many of us came to education because we felt called to serve learners the way we had been served through education ourselves. And in these times, when we have been called to perform that service in new ways, we have and will continue to do so because that’s who we are. So for just a few minutes, I’d like to focus on you: the educator and the person.

Designing Effective Teaching Materials
This six-minute screencast (6'06") is a top-level set of guidelines for developing effective teaching materials. For some, it may feel like going over well-worn ground, for others it may provide pause for thought. Rationalising what constitutes learning materials seems superficially straight-forward but when one considers the different institutional interpretations of what represents 'direct' learning versus 'delf-directed' learning it soon becomes apparent that judgement is needed even here.

The closure of schools has meant the COVID-19 outbreak has affected more than 130 countries, impacting over 80% of the world’s student population. At the higher education level, close to 60 million, that is one in four, previously enrolled students are currently not attending a higher education establishment.
Does it Work? The Most Meaningless Question to Ask about Online Education
One of the most frequently and persistently asked questions about online education is “does it work” or “is it effective.” It is a legitimate question for it is only natural and reasonable for anyone faced with the decision to undertake online education to want to know if it works. But this seemingly reasonable question is not only meaningless but also dangerous.

5 Questions to Ask When Evaluating an Online Learning Provider
When done well, K-12 online learning can be quite effective, opening doors to numerous learning opportunities that students wouldn’t receive otherwise—while also providing rich and rigorous instruction. Your webinar doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s a social interaction and social interactions aren’t perfect! But there are some effective approaches that you should apply so that you and your students can make the most out of your time together.
Educator Coffee (or Tea) Time
The Idea Many of us in education are now working from home. This can be challenging as we juggle family responsibilities, finding quiet space for each member of the family to work, as well as time together with family to work through issues and concerns in the middle of a pandemic. We need time to talk with colleagues and friends. It helps us to realize that we are not alone with our challenges in these times as well as an opportunity to learn and teach with others.

Actively Learn - A Huge Resource of Ready-Made Interactive Learning for English Language Learners
Actively Learn isn’t just a great source of learning content for grades 6 through to 12, though if you are teaching adult learners much of the grade 12 content would still be appropriate. It’s also an LMS that enables you to create and track the use of learning materials across your classes, and a teacher development tool that enables you to train teachers in aspects of materials development and instructional design.
Online-only college classes pose some distinct challenges for instructors
Anna Roberts teaches an entrepreneurship course at the Smeal College of Business at Penn State University. She has around 25 students this semester, and the class is normally very active. She doesn’t lecture for more than 15 minutes at a time. She puts students in groups to stimulate their creative thinking using construction paper and Play-Doh. None of that is possible now.
8 Non-Digital Remote Learning Ideas
Before our eyes, we are watching districts and schools valiantly roll out remote learning plans to support all students during extended closures. Equally as important have been the many innovative ways to make food available to our most disadvantaged children. I cannot commend their efforts enough. Throughout this ordeal, we must be patient, understanding, and flexible as teachers and administrators, with little to no training in this area, do their best to provide an education to students.
Moving events online: Platforms, strategies and challenges
We are seeing a flood of event cancellations in response to the global threat of COVID-19. This has triggered renewed interest in organising virtual conferences and generally moving face-to-face events into the virtual space. These discussions are not new. The environmental impact of the many thousands of events taking place around the world has had people question whether they should try to run more events online. But neither this nor the significant cost of attending these events has led to a significant reduction of conference travel.

In the spirit of working together to adapt to this unprecedented situation, we asked some of our best professors to share advice for teachers who are making the switch to online instruction for the first time.
Transitioning to online learning in higher education
For universities/educators new to online learning, where should they start with making the transition? In a time of so much uncertainty, providing as much information as you can is key. For the Love of Learning
In trying times, we often hear that mind-set matters. Hope can keep us going when things feel impossible. Optimism can improve outcomes that initially appeared bleak. As faculty members across the nation and around the world transition to distance learning in the coming weeks, I’d like to argue that mind-set matters in how we take up this new challenge and what opportunities we find in it.

Paul Hoskins - LinkedIn
Having recently recovered from the Covid-19 virus, but still in self isolation, I’ve had a great deal of time to reflect on how we might be able use this difficult situation to benefit universities in some way. Whilst I’ve been banging the drum for digital transformation, within higher education, for many years, I have often been frustrated by both the lack of speed and reluctance to instigate cultural change.

Not all young people are ‘digital natives’ – inequality hugely limits experiences of technology
There is a belief that younger people are fully engaged with the digital world. Perspective | How inequities in computer science prompted three educators to innovate
Teaching our 21st century students the 21st century knowledge, skills, and mindsets they will need to fully participate in their careers and lives is an act of equity and social justice, and teaching computer science (CS) is a critical part of this equity equation. Open University help for other institutions – drop in sessions Several people (no, they’re not imaginary) have asked if the OU can make its expertise available to other institutions and educators as they engage in the online pivot. Of course, the immediacy of this shift is very different from designing a purposefully distance ed course with the luxury of time, so some of that expertise may not be appropriate. But some of it will. In addition, I think as the immediate implementation settles down people will start looking more medium to long term. Will the first semester next year be at a distance? Should we build in more distance ed options as part of our contingency planning?

Colleges With Online Programs Got a Jumpstart in Reacting to Pandemic
In the past few weeks, colleges and universities nationwide have been shutting down traditional face-to-face classes and moving students online en masse in response to the coronavirus pandemic. While higher education has increasingly embraced online education over the past decade, the sudden pivot to remote education has been a steep learning curve for many institutions and their faculty members. Turning a course virtual on a dime—and, more important, doing it well—is nearly impossible for professors accustomed to lecturing in front of undergraduates.
Online Learning for People who Dislike Online Learning
Well, here we are. As I write this blog, many of you are into your second week of eLearning (with some in their third week) even though you swore you would never engage in online education. I get it. I do. As an early adopter (I taught my first online class in 1997 on WebCT at the University of Northern Colorado as a Grad assistant), I have had to defend the medium for 23-years. To many, eLearning will never be more than the bastard-child of “real” learning, meaning face-to-face learning will always “trump” (no pun intended) any other kind.

At this point it is clear that traditional face-to-face (f2f) instruction for higher education in the US has ended for the rest of the spring academic term. Getting on the same page in an all-remote team
Although the variety of tools available to fully distributed teams is staggering — everything from virtual stand-ups, sit-downs, async, sync, todo, not-todo, audio plus screen, all video, post-it shares, partial video, full video, AR, VR, and so forth — it’s not an easy to thing to connect 1-to-many. However connecting 1:1 is easy because there’s no ambiguity with respect to who’s communicating. That goes for all-remote or all-premise the same way. Direct, unfiltered communication is super powerful.

E-tivities - Introduction
E-tivities are frameworks for enabling active and participative online learning by individuals and groups. E-tivities are important for the online teaching and learning world because they deploy useful, well-rehearsed principles and pedagogies for learning as well as your choice of networked technologies. They focus on the learners- the people I call the participants, who are contributing, providing, reworking, interpreting, combining most of the knowledge. They overturn the idea that learning depends on one big expert and his/her conveying of knowledge. They are based on the strong idea that knowledge is constructed by learners through and with others.
The COVID-19 online pivot - Martin Weller
The outbreak of COVID-19 has seen many universities closing campuses and shifting learning online. It’s unprecedented and suddenly puts ed tech front and centre in a way it hasn’t been before. For those of us who have been doing online learning or distance ed for a while it can seem a bit irritating to have been seen as second class for so long and then suddenly deemed worthy of interest. It will be tough for lots of academics to teach online if they have little or no experience of it. Without the necessary support or development required in such a small time frame it is likely to be frustrating and full of potential errors, which makes educators and students feel vulnerable. So we should be helpful and show solidarity in this period.

Pedagogy is always at the heart of how we design online courses at Thomas Edison State University. We embrace an open and collaborative course design process that enables multiple experts to meaningfully collaborate around learning outcomes, course objectives, and course content to develop the most interactive, engaging, and effective courses possible. Based on online learning standards, industry research and best practices, we champion an outcomes-first approach to course design and utilize technology to engage students wherever they are in the learning process. A well-designed course must have a way to measure success – and that measure involves ensuring our courses help prepare students to achieve stated learning outcomes.

Moving to digital education
The purpose of this post is to shed some light on some thoughts to consider, good practices and tips for moving from face-to-face teaching to digital education.
Your content is online, what's next? Tip #8: Challenge your assumptions about student participation
If you are going to be successful in the online teaching space, you’re going to have to challenge your assumptions about online student participation. Drops in student participation are expected about a quarter of the way into any online course but don't mistake this for disengagement.
Online Digital Resources for your Classroom

What we learnt from “going online” during university shutdowns in South Africa
Universities are “going online” on a scale never seen before because of Covid-19. Advice, tips and communities are springing up to support academics and students. Teaching and learning professionals in numerous roles are working flat out to be of assistance. It is not the first time this has happened – after natural disasters such as the Christchurch earthquake and the New Orleans floods, there was a hasty shift online.
Building a Community of Learning
In times like these, the importance of working together becomes more apparent than ever. Uniting as one community to share critical resources and information is both a sign of solidarity, and a sign of our collective commitment to the good and wellbeing of all people — not just the ones in our own campus classrooms.
Emotionally Intelligent Online Teaching
In the quick pivot to all-online teaching, faculty everywhere are rising to the challenge of implementing practical and innovative ways to preserve academic continuity amid campus closures. They also find themselves in a peculiar position of leadership. Whether their courses were online all along, or are part of the overnight COVID-19 “rapid remote” transition, instructors everywhere have been thrust into the role of being the leader of distance learners.

Co-constructing a caring community online
A changed role for your class As you think about moving your class online, one key difference between in-person and online learning to note is the more central role class time plays in building and heightening community. In an in-person learning experience, students can use transition time before and after class, as well as physical spaces on campus, to check in with you and with each other. In an online learning experience, however, opportunities to interact outside of class time are often more limited. In online learning, synchronous class time has a heightened role in building community because other places of physical proximity are no longer serving that purpose.
